Did you know?

While its true that the extraction of the stone nearby Fontvieille existed in the CHALCOLITHIC period (+/- -3.500 BC) and developed during the Roman and medieval periods, the real growth of the stone cutting in Fontvieille was in the 19th century (from 1815 till 1896). Thanks to the expansion of the stone market as well as to the improvement of the communication channels and transport (road, railway).

Fontvieille owes much to its cariers, who by their presence and by the needs for their activity allowed the creation, maintenance and expansion of our village. Fontvieille was created thanks to the will of its carriers. Today the company 'Les Carrières de Provence' situated in Fontvieille has an annual production of 30.000 m3.
